A First in Tele-Radiology

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has developed what is believed to be the world’s first Android-based tele-radiology collaboration platform allowing doctors to download medical images while discussing it in real time. The ENDEAVOUR-Mobile software system allows images stored in the ‘ENDEAVOUR server’ to be viewed clearly on Android-based smartphones, tablet devices and any personal computer. This is unlike a similar software system released on April 19 that requires high bandwidth and is only available to iPad users.

2nd Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop (SEPoW 2010), 22 Dec. 2010 @Paradise Sandy Beach Hotel, Penang

2nd Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop
Date: 22 December 2010
Venue: Paradise Sandy Beach, Tanjung Bungah, Penang, Malaysia

Second Software Engineering Postgraduates Workshop (SEPoW 2010) is a forum for Master’s and Ph.D. postgraduates who conduct research in software engineering mainly in Malaysia. The first SEPoW 2009 was hosted for the first time in Malaysia in conjunction with 16th Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC 2009). Postgraduates will converge to present and discuss their research with peers and experienced researchers in a constructively critical atmosphere. The workshop provides mentoring panel consisting of experts in different areas of software engineering who will actively reflect on the research work and will contribute to the discussions. Presentations and discussions will be conducted in English. The workshop welcomes software engineering postgraduates who have completed extended research proposal stage to submit, participate and grab the opportunity to gain beneficial feedbacks and mock viva of their research work from experienced researchers.

Important Dates:
Deadline for Full Paper Submission: 10 November 2010 (Extended to 14 November 2010)
Notification of Acceptance: 22 November 2010
Camera Ready: 1 December 2010

The one-day event of 2nd SEPoW 2010 with the theme “Sustaining Software Engineering Research and Practice” succeeded in bringing both invited international and local experts in software engineering to converge and share their expertise with participating postgraduates. The workshop consisted of two talks by international experts and twenty-two presentations of selected postgraduates’ research. Assoc. Prof. Jin Song Dong shared his work on model checker for design analysis and verification followed by a sharing session on software engineering publication. The second talk by Prof. Karl R. P. H. Leung discussed a technical topic “On Metamorphic Testing” and a sharing session on his dream on future software development method. In the afternoon session, there were four sessions covering four main topics: software requirements and methodology, software design and architecture, program analysis and software testing, and software development and methodology. Each presentation derived constructive comments from panel of mentors comprising both international and national experts in software engineering. We thanked all participating experts and postgraduates, the advisor Prof. Dr Rosni Abdullah, the workshop chair Prof. Dr Shamsul Sahibuddin, the secretariat and committee members, including student volunteers, and others who have contributed to the success of the workshop. We hope to be able to organise the 3rd SEPoW 2011 as the co-located event of the 5th Malaysian Software Engineering Conference (MySEC 2011) to sustain software engineering research and practice in Malaysia.

2iTechno: Technical Skill Training II - PHP and MySQL, 9-10 Nov 2010 @CSUSM

2iTechno: Technical Skill Training II - PHP and MySQL is one of the activities in the series of 2iTechno programme in collaboration with Kulim Technology Park Corp. (KTPC). The programme aims to groom undergraduates in their final year projects towards developing software systems that have commercial values.

The two-day training is only open to final year students mainly those in Grooming the Researchers of the World (GRoW) programme and Raising Awareness in Software Engineering (RAiSE) programme. Final year students who conduct their final year projects using PHP and MySQL will also get the priority. The outline of the training is as below:

First Day:
Basic PHP syntax, PHP functions and how to structure the system which includes Model-View-Controller (MVC), database management and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS).

Second Day:
Create common modules in a generic website example login function, email, files management and search. At the end of the training, the students should have a workable system.

Fourty three final year students attended the technical skill training on PHP and MySQL supported by KTPC and School of Computer Sciences, USM. In overall the training managed to equip the students with the basic skills in developing a website using PHP and creating the database using MySQL. We would like to thank the dean, Prof Rosni Abdullah and also Encik Saidin Abdul Rahman, the representative of KTPC for supporting this event. We also thank the secretariat among our administrative staff: Encik Mohd. Redzuan Asmi, Puan Chan Joon Kew and Puan Aida Lob Abu Bakar for managing this event and also our technical staff who assisted in technical matters. Finally, we thank Puan Sharifah Mashita Syed Mohamad for coordinating this event and last but not least Cik Aisyah Ismail, the trainer. We hope all the participants will have more confidence and technical skill to proceed with their final year projects using PHP and MySQL after attending this training.
