A group of researchers from the School of Computer Sciences won a silver medal at PECIPTA 2009 held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 8-10 Oct. 2009. The project headed by Dr Dhanesh Ramachandram and Assoc. Prof. Dr Mandava Rajeswari presented the research project known as WML-Endeavor. White Matter Lesions (WML), also known as White Matter Hyperintensities and Leukoraiosis, have been shown to be indicators of several neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke and Alheizmer’s Disease which often affect older aged individuals.
In screening patients for WML, a radiologist often needs to examine hundreds of individual MRI slices as the prevalence and presentation of WML vary from one patient to another. Not withstanding, T2-weighted and T1-weighted modalities and more significantly, the FLAIR (Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery) modalities should be examined in the manual detection process. This turns out to be time consuming and laborious.
Dr Dhanesh and the team members won silver medal at PECIPTA 2009
WML- Endeavor is a Java-based software for automatically Detecting WML in Brain MRI images. It is part of the award-winning, multi-platform Extensible Medical Image Analysis and Visualization Platform (ENDEAVOR). Unlike most available approaches, the software requires no prior training, is extremely fast and very accurate. The detection workflow includes skull stripping, histogram processing and statistical analysis. The detection results can then be used to further scrutinize images, perform accurate segmentation or volumetric quantification. The software is DICOM compatible, allows multi-user image annotation and even generates interactive 3D-models. WML-Endeavor has potential usage in clinical studies, aiding drug discovery and mass screening of brain MRI.
